Program/Scope

The intention of the submitted project was to create an intervention on the east footbridge of Craig Ellwood's ArtCenter College of Design. As per the requirements of the partially formulated program that was supplied mandated that no major structure changes could be made to the existing structure. It was, in theory, to be considered a temporary structure, with the ability to last 5-8 years.

Solution:

The Bridge, which spans a particularly lush ravine affording a vista of both the San Gabriels and the town of Pasadena, has always felt like such a confining space for the students, faculty and staff. For many of them, particularly the students, the bridge offers them the only fresh air and natural light they will experience throughout their day. The bridge, in effect, becomes a metaphorical cage. The materiality and color or the original structure only adds to this sentiment.

In recognizing this, I chose to base my project on the idea of ESCAPE.

How do we escape from the confines of the building, if even for a moment?

I came to realize that my own interests were those outside of the bridge, the space where the trees and sky occupied. Spring rain clouds appear over the San Gabriels, their buxom shapes juxtaposed beautifully against my squared framing. The conflation of these two forms partially gave rise to the project's form. The logic is simple. The end product is too, but only if the process is realized. My presentation hopefully clearly outlines this process.
